Honduras television manager shot to death

July 5, 2015

The manager of a Honduran television station was shot dead in an attack by gunmen on a motorcycle north of the capital, officials told local media on Sunday.

Joel Aquiles Torres, 48, was in his car Saturday when unknown assailants approached on a motorcycle and riddled the vehicle with gunfire, striking the car 29 times, according to police.

The killing marks the 56th death of a journalist or media worker over the past 12 years, according to official figures. Only four cases have been brought to trial.

Torres was manager of the Canal 77 station in Taulabe, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of the capital Tegucigalpa.

Honduras has the world’s highest murder rate — 68 for every 100,000 residents, according to the National University Violence Monitoring Group.
